For a lot of campers, “pet-friendly” is the first filter they check when searching for a campground. At Carolina Camp Cedar, dogs are welcome — bring your four-legged travel companion along for a stay in the Carolina foothills of Pickens, SC, and let the whole family experience what makes this corner of South Carolina special.

Dogs Are Welcome at Carolina Camp Cedar

Dogs are welcome at RV sites throughout the park. Settle into a shaded site near the lake or under the tall pines while your dog gets their first deep sniff of Pickens County fresh air. We ask that dogs stay on leash in common areas to keep things comfortable for all guests and their pets. Beyond that, come as you are — leash, bowl, muddy paws and all.

Pet-Friendly Trails Near the Campground

One of the best things about staying near Pickens with a dog is the number of trails where leashed dogs are welcome. The SC foothills offer everything from strenuous summit hikes to easy lakeside walks.

Table Rock State Park — Leashed dogs are welcome on all trails at Table Rock, including the main summit trail (7.2 miles round trip, ~2,000 ft elevation gain). It’s a strenuous hike, but trail-fit dogs handle it well. Bring plenty of water for both of you — the climb is sustained and shade is limited near the summit. The trailhead is just 8 miles from Carolina Camp Cedar.

Carrick Creek Nature Trail — Located inside Table Rock State Park, this shorter 2-mile loop through shaded forest with a creek crossing makes a great dog-friendly outing if you want a trail walk without the full summit push. Dogs on leash are welcome.

Keowee-Toxaway State Park — Trails through this park follow the shoreline of Lake Keowee and welcome leashed dogs. The terrain is gentler than Table Rock and the lake views make for a relaxed, beautiful outing.

Caesars Head State Park — About 30 minutes from camp, Caesars Head offers multiple trail options including access to Raven Cliff Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in the eastern US. Dogs on leash are permitted on many trails — check current park rules before visiting.

Tips for Camping with Dogs in the SC Foothills

Pack water from the campsite. Creeks and natural water sources can carry parasites. Always carry water from a clean source for your dog on any trail, especially on longer hikes like Table Rock.

Check for ticks after every outing. The foothills are tick country in spring and summer. Run a full tick check on your dog after every trail walk, and make sure their tick prevention is current before you travel.

Shade and timing matter in summer. Pickens summers are warm. Our tree-lined sites offer natural shade, but plan trail activities for early morning or evening during July and August. Paw pads can overheat on sun-exposed granite — Table Rock’s summit has significant exposed rock.

Secure food overnight. Raccoons and other wildlife are active at night throughout the foothills. Store food in your RV or a hard-sided container — this protects both the local wildlife and your dog from scavenging situations.

What Makes the SC Foothills Great for Dogs

The Pickens area has a lot going for dogs beyond the trail network. The town of Pickens is small, walkable, and genuinely outdoor-oriented. The Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway (SC-11) — which runs right past Carolina Camp Cedar — offers miles of scenic driving with frequent pulloffs for stretching legs. Greenville, about 35 minutes south, has a robust walkable downtown and multiple outdoor patios that welcome leashed dogs.

The foothills climate is also ideal for dogs much of the year. Spring and fall bring comfortable temperatures perfect for long trail days, and even winter in the Pickens area is mild enough for outdoor activity most days.
